HMS MMH 760: Internship in Media, Medicine, and Health

The MGH Center for Global Health is collaborating with Harvard Medical School’s M.S. in Media, Medicine, and Health Program. The one-year M.S. program includes an internship/independent course and is currently seeking MGH-based mentors to host students this Fall. Mentors can be faculty as well as administrative staff who have a defined project for which they need support. For more information, please see the course description below. MMH 760: Internship in Media, Medicine, and Health is an individual internship course in which a student of the Media, Medicine, and Health master’s program at Harvard Medical School works with a supervisor at a lab or program for one semester as a participant-observer; photographer, documentarian, or journalist; or social media specialist. Specific criteria will be developed in a committee of student, supervisor, and MMH program directors, and will include a weekly work schedule, clear goals for written or artistic work, a midterm committee conference, and a final public presentation of their internship work. 

The goal is that the deliverables not only serve the students, but also are mutually beneficial and raise the visibility of the work of the labs and programs. For example, a student intern might develop a social media campaign or conduct interviews for a dynamic program profile for a website or create a podcast to promote a program campaign. 

The duration of the internship is flexible with some variability around a half or full semester of work. Students will receive credit based on the number of hours and weeks, which will be determined in conversation with the supervisor. Students may repeat the course in the spring semester.
