Andrew Wooyoung Kim (김우영) is a biological & medical anthropologist, Research Fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital, and an Honorary Lecturer in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand. His research integrates anthropological, biological, and epidemiological approaches to understand how historical trauma produces mental health inequities in historically marginalized communities. Dr. Kim’s current work examines the intergenerational effects of political violence under South African apartheid on stress physiology and psychiatric outcomes and in second and third generation children. Through a collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of the Witwatersrand and the South African Depression and Anxiety Group, he is also running a study on the perceptions, experiences, and mental health impacts of COVID-19 in tertiary psychiatric hospitals and communities in Johannesburg. He earned his B.S. in Anthropology and Human Biology at Emory University, received his PhD in Biological Anthropology at Northwestern University, and working with Dr. Alexander Tsai during his postdoctoral fellowship.
