Global Medicine Residency Program

The Global Medicine Residency Program is a three-year residency track in internal medicine followed by a 1 year clinical fellowship and faculty development program.  This 4 year program merges global health and care for vulnerable populations, focusing on comparative lessons in health care innovation, evaluation, policy, and delivery across diverse contexts and resource settings. Our residents have protected academic and travel time, receive tuition support towards the Harvard Program in Clinical Effectiveness (PCE) course, participate in novel curricula, apply their knowledge in low-resource settings with underserved populations in urban Boston and Uganda, gain health systems training, and develop a scholarly thesis.

Global Medicine Fellowship

The Global Medicine Fellowship builds upon the residency program’s foundation and mission to promote our fellows’ development as clinicians, teachers, researchers, and global health leaders focused on improving the health of underserved populations around the world. Fellows will develop clinical and analytical skills, a deep understanding of public health principles, a systems-based approach, and advocacy tools to advance health equity and improve the health of communities. The fellowship will provide physicians with the expertise, flexibility, and protected time to cultivate their individualized career path in global health. The key components of the one-year program are:

  • Approximately 5 months of in depth field experiences in global health
  • Intentional, structured mentorship focused on individualized career goals and the skills and relationships necessary to reach those goals
  • Care for vulnerable patients and populations across a variety of settings including urban Boston and rural Uganda
  • Supported, mentored transition into clinical attending role
  • Pragmatic, career-oriented global health didactics and conferences
  • Scholarly project in global health at the level of a first author or the equivalent
